Barbara has always been passionate about animals. As a child, she “saved” many turtles and kittens from the ponds and roadways in the neighborhood. So it was only reasonable to expect that as an adult, her commitment to animals would grow and expand, particularly to companion animals. There were tremendous stories about these animals, how they came to live in her home and changed her life.
Over a decade ago, she and her husband Dave became active in canine rescue when they learned of the overwhelming need for foster homes to rehabilitate animals. She home fostered shelter dogs, owner surrendered animals and many puppy mill survivors. She has coached foster families dealing with dogs in difficult transitions and worked with adopters to help dogs overcome unwanted behaviors.
The result of her work the dogs has resulted in two books: The Foster and Adoption Guide which is a valuable resource for those working in canine rescue. Through the work there have been many life lessons learned from the dogs; stories of these animals were compelling! These stories are gathered together are published under the title: Lessons Learned The Awakened Heart.
Both are available on the Books page.

We adopted our first two puppy mill rescue dogs in 2006 and that's when the real adventure began. Without the help and guidance of their foster mom, Barbara Fleischhaker, I often wonder how we would have survived through that first year. In the "Foster and Adoption Guide", Barbara shares the knowledge she has gained through years of hands-on experience. It is an invaluable resource for anyone rehabilitating or transitioning a dog into their home.
